A common but favorite bird, the American robin can be found over nearly all of North America. The robin is a traditional sign of spring in the north, and, for some, is a resident year-round. Often found in parks and yards, robins share our urban lives, usually on our lawns, with heads cocked, searching for their next meal.
The setting of this painting is my backyard. I enjoy traveling to observe nature, but sometimes I don't need to venture too far. This robin was a visitor to my native, or western, dogwoods. I was intrigued with capturing the spring sunlight on the bird and the flowers. I also enjoyed the complimentary color scheme - the red of the robin's breast and the green of the foliage - all punctuated with the white of the blossoms.
