Yellowstone’s Future
"Yellowstone's Future", by John Seerey-Lester, is the second in a series of limited edition fine art prints commemorating the triumphant return of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park. This print tenderly depicts the first generation of wolves born in yellowstone since their eradication in the 1930's. These precious wolf pups await the return of their mother, nestled in the warmth and safety of their den. There the pups remain, unaware of the historical significance of thier birth and oblivious to the long struggle that returned them to their rightful habitat.
In 1995, after years of planning and preparation, wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone. Among those first wolves were numbers 9 and 10, affectionately called Natasha and Arnold. Natasha and Arnold bonded in the wild, exploring the beauty of their new home together. Although Natasha and Arnold wore radio collars, the researchers eventually lost track of them. A few days later, Arnold was killed outside the boundaries of the park. Natasha was found, stressed and confused. Upon examination, it was discovered that she has recently given birth. After much searching, a distant cry was heard by a member of the search party. Natasha's eight pups were found, huddled in their rock crevice den. At the time, these pups represented over forty percent of the entire wolf population of Yellowstone.
This momentous discovery is celebrated in Yellowstone's Future.
Natasha's is but one story in the continuing saga of the wolves' return to Yellowstone.
