Beach Bonfire
"I wanted to portray a different kind of campfire experience with this image. It's a new location for me, but it's more than just a campfire in a new setting. It's about the whole experience - the sea spray, the sounds of the surf, and the fascination of driftwood, among other things. This campfire is in a small, private cove, and it's shown against the background of the pounding Pacific surf. I'm known for my paintings of the mountains, but people go to the beach for the same reason they go to the hills - to experience the natural environment. It's fun for me to explore new ways of experiencing light in the wilderness - no matter what setting I find that wilderness in." - Stephen Lyman
