It's a striking study in contrasts - the restless energy of churning, white water and the quiet, contained power of a black bear. We saw this bear at fairly close range on the shore of a quiet river. We were in a canoe. He was surrounded by bright green and yellow sunlit foliage. I decided to show him in a simple Rothko-like black rectangle with a narrow band of white water beneath. - Robert Bateman
