My first experience of breeding loons was in the rugged landscape of Greenland in 1982. I was working as an assistant leader with a British Schools Exploring Society expedition teaching art and wildlife studies. Our group was camped by a large lake where a pair of loons had just hatched two chicks. For me, the loons, with their haunting calls and in such a magnificent setting, were the most memorable part of the whole expedition. Often, the early morning mist rising off the water accentuated their mystical quality. Now, so many years later, those calls are still as vivid as the day I first heard them. - Keith Brockie
