The Chesapeake Bay with approximately 6,000 miles of shoreline is the largest estuary on earth and attracts sailors from around the world. From broad expanses of open water to quiet, picturesque coves its history and beauty are unequalled.

In "Breezing Up" we see members of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club as they begin a race west of the bridge on the Rappahannock River. A Gold Cup course is being used with the first leg to windward. The boats race under PHRF handicap rules.

The yacht club was founded in 1936 and is located in Irvington, Virginia on Carters Creek, which can be seen on the far left shoreline. The club is a member of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association.

This race was the second in their Spring Series and was won by "Aerwana," the dark blue Morgan sloop to the left of the painting's center.

Also on Carters Creek is the acclaimed Tides Inn which can be seen with its distinctive red roof. The Inn's motor yacht Miss Ann, which is used for guests' cruises is seen steaming upriver through the center span of the bridge.
