Evening Glow – Coyote
The image of the coyote is cloaked in mystery and myth - it is perceived as a scoundrel, a scavenger, a cowardly bandit and as an embodiment of mystical powers, even eternal life. Ancient native Americans to present day city dwellers have all created stories and legends about this true survivor. The coyote fits all of the legends and none of them.
I wanted this painting to portray a sense of mystery, so I used spot lighting, a Rembrandt influence, on the animal. The coyote is bathed in the glow of the evening light as something across the pond catches its attention.
