Face to Face
There is something unnerving about looking into the eyes of a primate; they exude a quiet intelligence which is both intriguing and menacing. I didn't want the viewer of "Face to Face" to feel threatened by this gorilla; I wanted to convey its strength, its gentle power, as that is how I always think of the gorilla.
The background of this painting is dark, to add drama and to allow no distraction from the gorilla's eyes. I painted the eyes of this gorilla so as to remain firmly fixed on the viewer, regardless of where the painting is viewed, to give one the sensation of being followed.
I am particularly pleased that this image is on the front cover of my book, "Face to Face With Nature", as little can compare with the immense presence of a gorilla's stare.
