October is traditionally crisp and colorful. Golds, reds, oranges and yellows have taken over the once green landscape. Many northern birds have retreated south to softer climates. But the eastern blue jay remains - a cool and often raucous flash of blue amid autumn's warm hues.

Days grow shorter, time seems more precious. The blue jay ignores all - cocky shrill, making its presence known among the fall colors.
