"It's difficult for me to express a philosophy about my work," said artist James Reynolds. "I feel that each canvas I undertake should be a challenge. Although perfection is never attainable, I want to keep getting closer. I simply try to paint one of the most exciting periods of our history as honestly as I can.

"I also try to make things dramatic. Early morning or late evening is always more dramatic than midday. Here, the lighting really brings out the drama of the moment on this Native American's outfit."
