Solo Singer – Gray Wolves
Wolves have historically held a special status with humans. I think part of their appeal is that they are powerful animals, but there is also something mystical about wolves; they have even been used as symbols in a variety of mythologies. I believe they are also appealing to us because there is something very human about wolves; they are social animals who exhibit very specific community behavior.
The more I travel in North America, the more opportunities I have to see wolves in the wild. The chances of seeing a wolf are few, and it is rare to see a pack of wolves in the wild. This painting is a snow landscape, with the wolf in the foreground as the solo singer. I tried to capture all the power of the wolf I could in the wolf in the background, standing at attention and looking directly at the viewer.
