Staying Close
“Early one morning in the Nakuru National Park near our home in Kenya, I spotted this female Rothschilde’s giraffe with her calf looking very alert and concerned,” said Simon. “The backlit animals were frozen in tension, which was a sure sign that a predator was nearby. Nothing was visible through my binoculars, but the unmistakable sound of a lion’s roar came echoing from the forest. The big cat may have been out of sight, but the deep resonance of its roar was sufficient to make the young giraffe stay very close to its mother.”
