Summer Sketches
The quality of the light in "Summer Sketches" is a very important element of the painting. The figure in the coolness of the shade receives a dappled light through the trees as does the grass around her, which is painted in many subdued shades - not only greens but also blues, violets and ochres. The lawn beyond her receives a strong warm sunlight. I think one can almost feel the different temperatures of the air and the ground.
To me, "Summer Sketches" is a very romantic painting and also a commentary ono the beauty that can be found in the world around us. Here we have a long summer day and a young girl sketching and recording the scenes around her as best she can. In my mind, she takes her work seriously and doesn't realize at all that she is the beauty in my painting.
