The Charge of Crazy Horse on Fort Laramie, 1864
During the summer of 1864, out of pure exasperation and disrespect for the army, Crazy Horse and a band of forty warriors charged through the Fort Laramie parade field, screaming war cries that alarmed the entire fort and sent the unnerved soldiers scrambling in all directions. Many of the horses tethered to the hitching posts broke free. Those grazing in the parade grounds ran ahead of the charging Indians and were later captured and given to those in Crazy Horse’s camp who needed them.
