The River’s Gift
The wagon itself is the gift from which these Cheyenne will strip iron rims to make spear points. The spokes and other wood will also be useful. This is a dramatic river setting with a massive wall of rock. For his painting, Howard left a large gap on the left to draw the eye down toward the action. He admits that working on that rock was quite a challenge. The angle of the riders going into the river is offset by the angle of the broken wagon. Each rock within the river itself was strategically painted to serve an artistic end.
