Uptown Squirrel
I find squirrels especially intriguing. Of all the small mammals, they are probably the easiest to observe, and this is very important to me when I undertake a painting. Squirrels are so universal and resilient. Their familiar antics can be observed in Bronx parks or deep in the Northern woods.
The challenge for me was to create an interesting composition with an everyday subject. In the case of "Uptown Squirrel", after I decided on the subject, I went to Central Park and found the appropriate trees and landscape and sketched until I arrived at a pleasing composition. The background in "Uptown Squirrel" inspired me with its combination of elements and textures - the fallen tree, the fungus and the moss - all containing hues similar to those found in the squirrel's fur.
